How to check and improve the network connection stability of Tapo & Kasa smart devices in the Tapo App

Just like any wireless client the strength of the signal the device receives is directly related to how that device will perform.  The stronger the signal the better the performance.

Part 1. Checking the signal strength of your TP-Link smart device.

The first step at addressing any performance issues is to check the strength of a device’s signal.  For TP-Link’s Tapo and Kasa devices this is as simple as logging into an app and tapping on an icon.  But how do you know if a signal is good or not?  Well the following information explains how to read the signal.

> Than -50 RSSI = a strong signal

-51 to -70 RSSI = an Average Singal

< -70 RSSI = a poor signal

For Cameras:

  • Open the Tapo app.
  • Tap on the camera.
  • Tap on Settings.
  • Find and tap on Network Connection.

For other smart devices (such as smart plugs, bulbs, etc.)

  • Open the Tapo app.
  • Tap on the camera.
  • Tap on Settings.
  • Tap on Device Info
  • Tap on the Wi-Fi Icon

Go to the Device Settings page of a smart device on the Tapo app, tap Device Info, and tap the Wi-Fi icon to see the RSSI (signal strength) value.

Part 2. How to improve network stability.

Here are some tips for you to optimize your network, you may test the stability again after the optimization.

  • Select a new location for your smart device, move the device closer to the access point or the router.
  • Update the device’s firmware.
  • Keep the smart device away from microwave ovens and other interference sources (refrigerators, ovens, Bluetooth devices, etc.)
  • Change the wireless settings on the router for the 2.4Ghz.
  • Contact the support of your router to optimize your network stability based on your network topology.
